Skype allows 3G calling in latest release
On the 29th May Skype released it’s latest version for iPhone, 2.0.0. This update contains the following:
- Call using your 3G connection*
- Near CD quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls
- Enhanced call quality indicator
- Improved startup time
- Fast access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen
GREAT I hear you cry, well not so great. *Skype-to-Skype calls will only be free until the end of 2010. After this point there will be a “small” fee charged monthly. When this comes into play, I don’t really see the point. A lot of the time when you have deals where it cost’s nothing to make a call anyway. Free minutes, free text knock out the need for the use of Skype to make your call. We shall have to see what this “small fee” is to make proper judgement.
It’s nice to see that they have made improvements on the audio. They have reported that they will be using wideband audio (SILK codec) for the iPhone 3GS, iPad and 2nd & 3rd generation iPod Touch. I use Skype on the iPod Touch from time to time and I must say I have found it very useful. I always think it is a good idea to have it plugged into a power source though as it really eats up the battery.
In conclusion, this is a welcome update which I am sure many have waited for some time. The fee may not make it worth using 3G Skype-to-Skype for a lot of people but the other improvements such as audio quality and quicker startup times make the update more than worthwhile.
